Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD and the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan TD today published the Department’s Statement of Strategy 2016 – 2019.

The Statement of Strategy includes key priorities for the Department and includes commitments under the Programme for a Partnership Government. It was prepared following extensive consultation with internal and external stakeholders and interested parties. Major elements of the Strategy on the transport side include measures to improve transport sector efficiency, reliability and safety. Minister Ross said “Transport plays a central role in the social and economic life of the country and the strategies that we are now putting in place will help to address the difficulties being experienced at the moment and will enhance the overall transport network and level of service provided to citizens.” The Minister added “The Statement recognises the uncertainties and challenges posed by Brexit to both transport and tourism which we need to meet head on and I am confident that we will do so.”

The next 3 years are also a critical period for the development of sport in Ireland and the Statement sets out how we plan to deal with the challenges in this sector. Minister O’Donovan stressed the importance of both sport and tourism to the well-being of society and the economy “The continued development of our tourism sector is essential to support growth in the economy and for job creation. I am working closely with the tourism bodies to ensure that we build on the success of recent years. We also need to grow active participation in sport and physical activity and the development of a new National Sports Policy will set out how this can be achieved.”
