Further analysis of Burglary and Related Offences
Under the CSO Crime Statistics released today, the category of Burglary and
Related Offences includes Aggravated Burglary; Burglary (not aggravated);
and Possession of an Article (with intent to burgle, steal, demand).
Minister Shatter highlighted that the figure for persons caught in
Possession of an Article (with intent to burgle, steal, demand) is, of
course, a crime prevention figure as the individual has been apprehended
before they have carried out the crime.
The statistics released by the CSO therefore, when further analysed,
provide the following information for 2012 as compared with 2011(12 month
period):
Crime Prevention:
· The number of apprehensions by An Garda Siochana of persons in
possession of an article (with intent to burgle, steal, demand) has
increased by 18.3%
Crime Committed:
· The number of aggravated burglaries has fallen by 15.8%
· The number of burglaries (not aggravated) has increased by 0.1%
· The total number of burglary and related offences (not including
persons caught in possession of an article with intent to burgle,
steal, demand) has fallen by 0.14%
Further commenting on the figures, Minister Shatter said “These figures
clearly show a very significant reduction in crimes of aggravated burglary
and a stabilisation of the annual number of non-aggravated burglaries.
Together with an increase of 18.3% in the number of persons apprehended, in
possession of an article with intent to burgle, steal or demand, by An
Garda Siochana, they point very clearly to the success of Operation Fiacla,
set up by the Garda Commissioner early in 2012 to combat a rise in
burglaries. I again congratulate Commissioner Callinan and members of An
Garda Siochana for their work in achieving these successes which I know
will be welcomed by members of the public all over the country."
