The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Eamon Gilmore T.D., today called on all parties in the Ukraine to work towards stabilising the situation in the country:

"I have been closely monitoring the evolving situation in the Ukraine. While I welcome the fact that the violence and bloodshed that we witnessed last week has ended, I call on all of those in Ukraine and the surrounding region to avoid any action or provocation that would destabilise the country. This has to be the first priority.

"The people of Ukraine should decide on their own future and be enabled to do so without external pressure. Ukraine’s territorial integrity, unity, and independence are of fundamental importance.

"I think it is in everybody’s interest, including that of neighbouring countries such as Russia, to promote stability. There is a need for dialogue with Russia, to reinforce the message that Ukraine’s relations with the EU should not be at the expense of its relations with Russia.

"I welcome the fact that work has now begun to seek a democratic and inclusive political settlement that will fulfil the aspirations and expectations of the Ukrainian people. The formation of a new Government will be an important first step. We look to those who are now in power in Kiev to behave in a responsible manner and to work together with all stakeholders in an inclusive and transparent way to prepare for the elections that have been scheduled for May.

"Ireland will work with our EU partners to support Ukraine in this challenging time.”
