Tánaiste to push the case for a speedy resolution of Ireland’s bank debt at EU-Latin America summit

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore T.D., will today (Saturday January 26th) hold one-to-one meetings with the Prime Ministers of France and Finland ahead of the EU-Latin America Summit which is taking place in Santiago, Chile this weekend.

During his meetings with Prime Ministers Jean-Marc Ayrault and Jyrki Katainen, the Tánaiste will push the case for a speedy resolution of Ireland’s bank debt, as he will when he addresses world leaders at the summit tomorrow (Sunday January 27th). German Chancellor Angela Merkel, EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy, as well as the Presidents of Brazil and Mexico will also be in attendance at the event, which is the first Summit of regional leaders under Ireland’s EU Presidency.

The objective of the Summit is to reinvigorate Europe’s economic relationship with Latin America and Caribbean.  The Tánaiste aims to promote economic cooperation and trade to the benefit of both regions particularly during our EU Presidency.   The Tánaiste’s discussions will build on the successful outcome to President Higgins’ visit to Brazil, Argentina and Chile in October last year.
