'The Four Masters and their Manuscripts Studies in Palaeography and Text – An important artefact in the story of Ireland" – Minister Deenihan

Tuesday 29th October, 2013 Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, will this evening launch a new publication 'The Four Masters and their Manuscripts Studies in Palaeography and Text' at the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, at 5pm.

Minister Deenihan commented:

"Professor Breatnach is a leading expert in this area, and this publication will be a useful resource for those who are interested in this period of our history. This book brings to light the tapestry of our history with new focus and great insight".

Written in the mid seventeenth century, these texts reach back into the darker corners of Medieval Ireland. They provide us with a real sense of what life was like at the time of writing, giving us a feel for the how the Irish language was presented in text and used at that time.

The book is fully illustrated with manuscript images accessed from the resources of the Irish Script on Screen (ISOS) on-line project of the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.

Editors Note:

Padraic Breatnach is the author of over one hundred published papers, reviews and books, reflecting interests in a wide range of Irish and Hiberno-Latin philology, and has made a special study of the Irish contribution to medieval European culture.
