The Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan T.D., congratulates Revenue on their continued success in tacking cigarette smuggling

“The Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan T.D., congratulated Revenue on their continued success in tacking cigarette smuggling. Last Friday (12/07/13) the Revenue Commissioners seized 10.4m cigarettes – the largest seizure of cigarettes in Ireland to date this year and the largest container seizure in Europe so far this year. This was followed up by an additional 1.2 million Cigarettes seized today at Dublin port.

Congratulating Revenue on their recent seizures Minister Noonan said: "This intelligence-led seizure last week, which represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of nearly €4m, is a significant blow to the criminals involved in this illicit trade. This was the largest container seizure in Europe so far this year. This was followed up by another seizure with a potential loss to the exchequer of over €325,000 today and highlights the Irish Revenue Commissioners ability to tackle this criminal activity.
