Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation Dara Calleary T.D. will join his fellow Ministers with responsibility for the Internal Market and Industry at today’s meeting of the EU Competitiveness Council in Brussels. Executive Vice President Vestager and Commissioners Breton and Sinkevičius will represent the European Commission at the meeting which will be chaired by the Swedish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch on behalf of the Swedish Presidency.

Ministers will look to agree a General Approach on a Regulation establishing a framework for setting ecodesign requirements for sustainable products, thus setting the stage for trilogues with the Parliament and Commission.

Minister Calleary said:

“Making sustainable products the norm is a critical part of the green transition. I am delighted to be able to support this ambitious proposal that will result in products that are more durable, reliable, reusable, easier to maintain refurbish and recycle, and are more energy and resource efficient.”

Ministers will also consider the process by which they can best consider and evaluate EU competitiveness and help deepen the Single Market.

Minister Calleary welcomed the proposed approach saying:

“With industry and internal market Ministers feeding into the Single Market governance cycle and strategic discussions, we will be better placed to consider EU competitiveness and the important role the Single Market plays in driving this competitiveness.”
