Statement from Minister Catherine Martin on the death of Dr. Éamon Phoenix

“It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of Dr. Éamon Phoenix. I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues. Éamon was a greatly valued member of the Expert Advisory Group on Centenary Commemorations and the National Famine Commemoration Committee. 

“His thoughtful and measured contributions were always very much appreciated. Éamon skilfully delved into and illuminated the experiences of communities and people whose everyday lives were impacted by the transformative events of their time. Éamon will be remembered and greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of working with him.” 

 

Dr Maurice Manning, Chair of the Expert Advisory Group on Centenary Commemorations added his condolences, saying:

 

“Éamon Phoenix was a historian of great integrity and empathy, a skilled communicator whose life was dedicated to building bridges between communities and illuminating the history of his beloved Belfast.  He was a true gentleman who made an enormous contribution to the study of Irish history.”
