Taoiseach Leo Varadkar attending World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland

The Taoiseach is attending the World Economic Forum annual meeting today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday) in Davos for meetings with political leaders and major employers.

Discussions are also likely to be dominated by the war in Ukraine and the cost of living, potential headwinds for the global economy and international trade, and managing the climate crisis.

The Taoiseach is expected to have a number of political meetings including Keir Starmer, the Leader of the UK Labour Party; Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, the Belarusian Opposition Leader; Samantha Power, Administrator USAID; the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola; and the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu.

On arrival last night, the Taoiseach took part in an IDA Ireland event attended by more than 50 industry leaders from IDA Ireland client companies and leading foreign direct investors in the Irish economy. The Taoiseach will also meet separately with senior representatives of multinational companies of significance to Ireland including Intel and Amazon.

The Taoiseach is highlighting Ireland’s enduring economic potential, stability and strengths, and our contribution to cooperation in Europe and protecting the rule of law in an uncertain world. He will emphasise that employment in Ireland is at record levels, and that Ireland has a rich pool of talented and innovative workers. He will also promote Ireland’s plans to become a major off-shore wind generator.

The World Economic Forum hasn’t been held in January since 2020 and is focusing on 'Cooperation in a Fragmented World'.
