The Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Defence, Micheál Martin TD has today launched a new Statement of Strategy for the Department of Foreign Affairs, for the period 2023 to 2025. This Statement of Strategy sets out the Department’s key priorities for the next two and a half years, across six high-level goals.

Speaking on the new Statement of Strategy, the Tánaiste said:

“I am pleased to launch this document which provides an essential framework to guide the work of the Department of Foreign Affairs in the period ahead. We remain committed to our core work of protecting and promoting peace on our island, including through the Shared Island initiative; providing a first class Consular and Passport Service to our citizens; supporting our diaspora communities; active and principled membership of the UN, the EU and other international fora; delivering a high-quality development programme; and expanding Ireland’s presence and influence abroad, to underpin prosperity and security at home.

“This Statement of Strategy also rightly and necessarily recognises the changed and challenging global context in which we are now operating, as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine enters its second year, and as we deal with complexities remaining from the aftermath of Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As the Statement of Strategy makes clear, strong coordination across Government at home, and with our key allies abroad – our EU partners, the US, the UK and others – remains key to developing sustainable and lasting responses to the many and complex challenges that Ireland is facing. The work of this Department at home and overseas will continue to be central to those efforts.”
