Minister Fitzgerald confirms submission of Ireland’s report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child

Frances Fitzgerald TD, Minister for Children & Youth Affairs, has today confirmed that Ireland has submitted the State’s Consolidated 3rd and 4th Reports to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child.

Submission of the report to the UN had been approved by Government.

Minister Fitzgerald stated: “The report will outline the most significant developments for children and young people and how Ireland has been implementing the main aims of the UN Convention since 2006.

“This Government has progressed a comprehensive and ambitious programme for children including: establishing a dedicated Department of Children & Youth Affairs; major reform of child protection services, including the planned establishment of a new Child & Family Agency; working to end the detention of children in St. Patrick’s Institution through development of National Child Detention Facilities in Oberstown; as well as legal and constitutional reforms aimed are protecting children and their rights.”

The Minister acknowledged the support of other Government Department and the NGO sector, coordinated by the Children’s Rights Alliance, in preparing Ireland’s report.

Ireland ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1992.
