Statement by Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore, T.D., on the death of Edward Haughey

"I was saddened to learn of the sudden and tragic death of Edward Haughey. He was a visionary businessman and a leading employer who brought many high-quality jobs to Newry in particular. Today Seanad Éireann and the House of Lords are joined by the loss of a man who served in both Chambers and whose interests and influence spanned both sides of the border. He took a great interest in Northern Ireland where he made his home and, whilst a member of Seanad Éireann, acted as a member of the British Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body and on the Forum for Peace and Reconciliation. My deepest sympathy goes to his family and friends and to the families and friends of all those killed in this tragic accident".
