Minister Donohoe to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos on 18 January

President of the Eurogroup and Minister for Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform, Paschal Donohoe TD, will travel today, 18 January, to Davos to attend the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum which this year convenes under the theme ‘Rebuilding Trust’.

Minister Donohoe will participate in a panel discussion on ‘Uniting Europe’s Markets’ together with the President of the European Central Bank Christine Lagarde, the President of the European Investment Bank Nadia Calviño, the Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Bank AG Christian Sewing and Roelof Botha, Managing Partner in Sequoia Capital. He will outline the work he is leading within the Eurogroup on strengthening European capital markets in the context of deepening the European Economic and Monetary Union and completing Europe’s single market.

The Minister will also have a series of bilateral meetings with global business leaders, senior officials from international organisations and international partners.

Speaking before his trip, Minister Donohoe commented:

“At a time when European economies face higher borrowing costs and still high deficit and debt levels, there is a renewed urgency in strengthening and further developing our European capital and financial markets given the substantial financing needs related to the green and digital transitions."

"I have been working intensively over the past year with European Finance Ministers to define the priorities which we need to focus on to allow our capital markets to play their role as a catalyst for our growth, competitiveness, twin transition, resilience and strategic autonomy. I look forward to sharing the Eurogroup’s collective efforts on this important initiative.”

Note to editors: The panel discussion on ‘Uniting Europe’s Markets’ will take place at 16:15 –17:00 CET and can be followed live at https://www.weforum.org/events/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2024/programme
