Taoiseach Leo Varadkar attending special European Council in Brussels

The Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar is in Brussels today (Thursday) for a special meeting of the European Council at which leaders will discuss Ukraine, migration and economic issues.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, the Taoiseach said: “Ukraine will be the principle topic of discussion at this special Council. As we approach the first anniversary of Russia’s brutal and immoral invasion, the European Union will show that it stands resolutely with the people of Ukraine for as long as it takes.

“The EU is rooted in freedom, democracy, the rule of law and a desire for peace. It continues to offer the hope of a better future to millions of fellow Europeans, from Ukraine and Moldova to the western Balkans, many of whom dream of joining the European Union and becoming EU citizens.

“Ireland and the EU will provide Ukraine with the humanitarian, military and financial aid it needs until Russia has been repelled, and we want to see its application for EU membership progress as quickly as possible.”

The Council will also discuss the issue of migration, including working closely with countries of origin and transit to better manage entries, increase returns where appropriate and to disrupt traffickers. All Member States, including Ireland, are experiencing increased numbers of migrants arriving at a time when we are also hosting large numbers fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The Taoiseach said: “Migration is a good thing for Ireland and enriches our society. It's important that we have robust systems in place to make sure that we welcome those who are genuinely fleeing war and oppression and return those who are not.”

On economic issues, the Taoiseach will emphasise that the EU needs to improve its overall competitiveness to retain and grow our prosperity. That means accelerating the green transition, boosting skills, strengthening the Single Market, competing the Capital Markets Union and maintaining an open and ambitious trade policy.
